Aylin Sezer, soprano

Soprano Aylin Sezer sang roles such as Violetta, Nedda, Pamina, Micaëla, Euridice (Orfeo ed Euridice), Nele (in the recently rediscovered work of Jan van Gilse’s Thijl) in various Dutch Opera companies such as, the Dutch Touring Opera, Opera Zuid and Opera Spanga. She sang with Theatre des Bouffes du Nord as Pamina in the world tour of Peter Brook's production of The Magic Flute. She had the pleasure to sing Elisabeth and Venus in a new chamber orchestra arrangement of Tannhäuser, together with the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra. Aylin sang the Dutch première of Elizbar Lomdaridze’s Vocalise, during a gala of the Dutch National Opera. Aylin was a member of the Young Ensemble of the Flemish Opera in the season 2014-2015, where she sang amongst other roles Emma (Khovanshchina), Fünfte Magd, Despina and Zerlina.

Aylin sang at the prestigious Prinsengrachtconcert in Amsterdam with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in 2021 and Mozart's Golden Years with Nederlands Kamerorkest under Peter Whelan in 2022. In 2023 she will sing Ravel, Sheherezade with Phion under Otto Tausk at Concergebouw Amsterdam.

She had the pleasure to perform twice in Concertgebouw’s ZaterdagMatinée, as Pisana in Verdi's I due Foscari under Giancarlo Andretta and various roles in Delius’ A village Romeo and Juliet under the baton of Sir Mark Elder.

Aylin sung under the direction of conductors such as Paul McCreesh, Alexander Joel and Dmitri Jurowski and worked with stage directors such as Peter Brook, David Alden and David Bösch.

Amongst her “traditional” performances as a soprano, Aylin also enjoys crossing artistic boundaries. A few examples of such performances would be: World Opera Lab’s Arïanna (as Arïanna), where music from different cultures around South East Europe and the Middle East were embroidered around Monteverdi’s Arianna’s lament. World Opera Labs, “‘passie van nu”, uniting musical traditions from around the world, around Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, and the themes of love and compassion. Aylin is a part of Ramon Valle’s Boundless Forces, bringing together all genres of music and embracing differences. She can also be heard in the soundtrack of the Dutch movie “De Belofte van Pisa” directed by Norbert ter Hall.

Aylin received the Schaunard Award for “Most Impressive Dutch Opera Singer of 2017” and The HOTIAD Award for “Turkish Artist of the Year 2017”, and was a finalist in the Leyla Gencer Voice Competition 2010.

Aylin has a Turkish father and a Dutch mother. She was born and raised in Istanbul. She moved to the Netherlands for her conservatoire studies and graduated from the Dutch National Opera Academy with a special distinction for “exceptional artistic quality”.

The village girl Micaëla (…) is portrayed warm and subtle by Aylin Sezer.
Place de l'Opera, Peter Franken, October 2020
Aylin Sezer is the ideal casting for Cesaria. I like hearing her sing and I love her voice. She makes a credible character of Cesaria, an experienced girl who always had to take care of herself and can play her men like a piano.
NRC, Rahul Gandolahage September 2020
Monteverdi’s Lamento d’Arianna was given a paramount interpretation by Turkish-Dutch soprano Aylin Sezer. One would see the show one more time just for her.
Opera Magazine UK, Robbert Nachbahr
Pagliacci starred Aylin Sezer, who was superb in every way as Nedda.
Trouw, Sander Becker, July 2019
Aylin Sezer (the voluptuous Nedda), stole the show with her agile and warm voice and her acting skills.
Theaterkrant, Thea Derks, October 2018
… the singers and the musicians are excellent, especially Aylin Sezer impresses with her pure soprano voice and impeccable diction.
Opera Magazine UK, Robbert Nachbahr
Aylin Sezer was lovely as Nele (...) with her extremely intimate singing of the lament over Thijl’s body.
NRC Handelsblad, Joep Stapel, July 2018
Soprano Aylin Sezer is powerful as Thijl’s tough girlfriend Nele, but impresses the most with her subtle lament “Bedroefde herteken”.
