Cathrine Winnes, conductor

Cathrine Winnes’s reputation extends beyond the conductor’s podium – where she works with many of the major Nordic orchestras and theatres – to the wider world of the media and the campaign for a more inclusive repertoire. She has worked with the most distinguished orchestras in Scandinavia and appeared in her own television series as both conductor and presenter.
Since 2015 Cathrine has been Chief Conductor and Artistic Leader of the Swedish Wind Ensemble, a contract that was recently extended to 2023. Together they have recorded all of Stravinsky’s music for winds with Peter Jablonski as piano soloist.
Cathrine has worked with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Odense Symphony Orchestra, Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra, Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra and Bogotá Symphony Orchestra. In opera she has conducted at the Royal Swedish Opera, the Estonian National Opera, the Gothenburg Opera, Malmö Opera and Norrlands Opera.
Recent highlights have seen Cathrine debut in South Africa with the Philharmonic Orchestras of Johannesburg and Durban, make her debut with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in Finland and conduct Benjamin Stærn’s opera The Snow Queen at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, following her leadership of the work’s premiere in Malmö. Future plans include appearances with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, at the Composers’ Festival of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen.
Cathrine has been praised for her brave and unusual programming, including both rarely performed music of the romantic era and forgotten jewels of the twentieth-century, including music by Lili Boulanger and Grażyna Bacewicz. She has premiered several contemporary works.
Cathrine is also recognisable as a broadcaster. Her series on Swedish national television SVT She Composes Like a Man brought many new listeners to suppressed music by female composers, in collaboration with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. She has conducted at the Nordic Council’s Arts Awards and the Nobel Prize Ceremony, both transmitted on SVT.
Cathrine holds a diploma degree in conducting from the Norwegian Academy of Music, where she studied with Ole Kristian Ruud, and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where she studied with Jorma Panula.
