Christopher Lichtenstein, conductor

Biography

Christopher Lichtenstein has been Music Director of the Danish National Opera (Den Jyske Opera) since September 2020 and first conducted the company in the much-discussed Scandinavian premiere of Weinberg’s The Passenger in 2018. Since taking up his position he has led performances of Verdi’s Rigoletto and the world premiere of Karsten Fundal’s Inkognito Royal. In the 2021/22 season, he conducted the company in new productions of Verdi’s Aida and Léhar’s The Count of Luxembourg.

Christopher was educated in the German opera tradition, beginning his career as a repetiteur and vocal coach at Staatstheater Braunschweig where he quickly rose to the rank of First Kapellmeister. In Braunschweig he conducted much of the operatic repertoire including Aida, Tosca, La Bohème, The Flying Dutchman, Elektra, Don Giovanni, Faust, Fidelio and Eugene Onegin among others while also leading productions of operettas and new and forgotten works including Argento’s The Journey of Edgar Allan Poe, Hubay’s Anna Karenina, Eek’s Peer Gynt and Eötvös’s Angels in America. Eötvös subsequently praised the German conductor’s ‘excellent, accurate, clear and calm’ technique and attributed the success of the production to his ‘effectiveness and talent.’

Christopher has been a regular guest conductor with Staatstheater Kassel, Theater Wolfsburg and the Regensburg Philharmonic. He has worked at the Pallacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City and collaborated with stage directors including Thaddeus Strassberger, Dietrich Hilsdorf, Adriana Altaras, Christopher Alden, Markus Bothe and Florentine Klepper. Hs has assisted the conductor Alexander Joel on productions of Wagner’s Parsifal and Tristan und Isolde.

Christopher completed his conducting studies at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg under Profesor Hans Rainer Förster, during which time he conducted opera productions, worked with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Würzburg and participated in master-classes as a song accompanist with Peter Nelson and Axel Bauni. He signed to Nordic Artists Management in 2021.
