Conny Thimander, tenor

Biography

Conny Thimander, Swedish tenor, received his Master of Arts degree from the University College of Opera in Stockholm.

Among his recent and future engagements are Flute in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Malmö Opera and Wachtmeister in Shostakovich’s The Nose at the Royal Danish Opera.

The Corona season featured Mr. Thimander as Merkure in Orpheus in the Underworld and Spoletta in Tosca at Malmö Opera. He also sang André in Rufus Wainwright´s opera Prima Donna and Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Royal Swedish Opera.

In past seasons Mr. Thimander has sung Niko in the opera Gegen die Wand at Deutsche Oper am Rhein, where he also sang in two operas by M.F. Lange - Die Schneekönigin and Vom Mädchen, das nicht schlafen wollte – an opera he would later also sing at Theater Bonn. He has featured in what could be said to be the national opera of Sweden: Aniara by Blomdahl, where he sang the high comedian Sandon at Malmö Opera. He has sung Ferrando (Così fan tutte) at both the Danish National Opera and at Confidencen and Lindoro in an adaptation for teenagers of L’Italiana in Algeri at the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus. He sang Goro in Butterfly and Remendado in Carmen at Malmö Opera, Missail/Idiot in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov and Tanzmeister/Scaramuccio in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Gothenburg Opera and Madrigal in Castagnoli´s opera Il Dragone in Gabbia at Teatro Regio Torino. Also the early music scene has seen Mr Thimander in various roles among which his appearances at the Drottningholm Palace Theatre as Pastore in L’Orfeo and the stuttering humpback Demo in Il Giasone by Cavalli are worthy of special mentioning.

His career can be said to have started with a jump in as the Italian singer in Capriccio, which he learnt on a very short notice to sing at the premiere at the Royal Swedish Opera, after which he directly got offered Tamino and Pong (Turandot) by the artistic direction at the theater. The Royal Swedish Opera then became his home stage and here he has also sung Remendado in Carmen, Ottavio in My brother is Don Juan, Åke in My mother is a dragon, Little Brother in Karlsson on the Roof and Harry in La fanciulla del West, directed by Christof Loy.

On the concert stages Thimander has performed most of the major oratorios. The Evangelist from the passions by J.S. Bach has become one of his specialties.

Mr. Thimander has been awarded with second prize in the competition Gösta Winbergh Award and in has received the Swedish Wagner Society Bayreuth Scholarship for his performance of David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

Review
THE NOSE, Royal Opera, Denmark
Information
The Police Inspector with particularly violent tendencies was given strong exposure by Swedish Conny Thimander, a high, piercing tenor in the Russian tradition.

Tidskriften Opera
The interplay is physical and well-oiled, thanks in part to Conny Thimander's rock-solid comic timing in the role of Francis Flute. His tenor sounds nicely focused.

Conny Thimander's parody of Lucia di Lammermoor (...) would almost be worth a review of its´ own.

There are many talented singers here, but I would especially like to mention Conny Thimander in the drag role as Francis Flute.
BORIS GODUNOV, Göteborgs Operan
Göteborgsposten
And last but not least Conny Thimander shines in the two roles as Misail and The Holy Fool. Thimander´s scene with the children's choir, the shopping trolley and Tsar Boris is one of the best in the whole show. Great acting by the opera's Holy Fool, the only one who actually dares to tell Boris the truth...

Conny Thimander with his dramatic tenor voice delivers a memorable interpretation, in reminiscence of the famous Russian tenor Georgii Nelepp. Here the music of Mussorgsky pierces deeply into the soul.
Hanna Höglund, Expressen
Conny Thimander… That is the star of the evening.
Molly Teleman, NT
Especially Mythos, vividly played by Conny Thimander, shines with his expressive voice and anxious body language.
Lennart Bromander, Aftonbladet
Conny Thimander … a natural comic talent, and there seems to be no limits as to how good he can get.
Kulturspeilet
Every opera manager should take notice of Conny Thimander.
UNT
Who impressed me the most was the tenor soloist and evangelist Conny Thimander … vocal and dynamic range paired with indisputable pitch control and expression was amazingly outstanding.
Maria Schottenius, DN
Conny Thimander is evangelist-journalist with backslick, fiery and thrilling and good.
Karin Helander, SVD
Conny Thimander makes a fine appearance as a lyrically sensitive Little brother.
UNT
Conny Thimander as Tamino had an utterly sonorous tenor voice.
Dalarnas Tidning
Conny Thimander is brilliant… He is completely in his character and pictures what he sings not just through the words but also through body and soul.
NT
The acting was peculiarly uninterested with one extraordinary exception in the substitute Conny Thimander…
