Jurek Dybal, conductor


Jurek Dybał is General Director and Chief Conductor of Sinfonietta Cracovia in the city of Kraków and a member of the string section of the Vienna Philharmonic. He has appeared with ensembles including the Beethoven Orchester Bonn, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, L'Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Concerto Köln, Bavarian Chamber Orchestra, Kuopio Symphony Orchestra, Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra Katowice, Polish Radio Orchestra and the Philharmonic Orchestras in Poznań, Kraków, Łódź and Gdansk.

Jurek has dedicated himself to the promotion and dissemination of Polish music. He is the founder and director of the Krzysztof Penderecki International Music Festival and has conducted the Polish premieres of Penderecki's Adagio for Strings, Music for Three Recorders, Marimba, Percussion and Strings and Concertino for Trombone and Orchestra (the latter co-commissioned by the Sinfonietta Cracovia). He also participated in the world premiere of the composer's quintet Leaves of an Unwritten Diary and the Polish and French premieres of the Duo Concertante.

As a conductor, Jurek has collaborated with world-renowned soloists such as Gidon Kremer, Martin Grubinger, Katia and Marlene Labèque, Xavier de Maistre, Cameron Carpenter, Lawrence Power, Erwin Schrott, Tomasz Konieczny and many of the singers of the Vienna State Opera.

He is the recipient of a number of prestigious accolades including an International Classical Music Award, Gramofon Award (Hungary), Pizzicato's Supersonic Award and two Fryderyk awards granted by the Polish Phonographic Academy. He has received the Golden Mask award and Jan Kiepura Opera Award in the Best Conductor category, the latter for his enthusiastically received stage adaptation of Penderecki’s opera Ubu Rex.

Jurek’s work as an opera conductor ranges from works by Baroque masters such as Telemann and Gluck, through to Dvořák and Wagner and to contemporary works by Grigory Fried and Michael Nyman. His recordings can be found on albums by Sony Classics, Warner Classics, Dux and others.
