Morten Grove Frandsen, counter-tenor

Biography

Morten Grove Frandsen is Denmark’s preeminent countertenor and a regular guest at the Royal Danish Opera, where he has appeared in Thomas Adès’s The Exterminating Angel, Hans Abrahamsen’s The Snow Queen (world premiere), David Bruce’s Nothing and John Frandsen’s The Martyrdom (world premiere).

Recent and upcoming engagements at the Royal Danish Opera include the role of Farnace in Mozart’s Mitridate with Concerto Copenhagen and Lars Ulrik Mortensen, and the title role in the world premiere of Louise Alenius’s new opera Manualen.

Morten graduated from the Royal Opera Academy in Copenhagen in 2016, three years after making his debut at Aarhus Summer Opera. In 2015, he was awarded the Copenhagen Opera Festival’s Talent Prize and the following year received both the Critic’s Circle Award and the Reumert Talent Award, the latter for his role in Karsten Fundal’s opera Leaves.

He has appeared to date in 14 world premieres, including Louise Alenius’s critically acclaimed immersive opera Silent Zone for Copenhagen Opera Festival (2017) and Fundal’s Incognito Royal for the Danish National Opera (2021). Morten has also worked with Trondheim Opera, Scottish Opera, The Funen Opera, Aarhus Summer Opera, Klang Festival, Riga Baroque Festival and the République and Black/White Theatres in Copenhagen.

Morten has appeared as a soloist with ensembles including the Copenhagen Phil and the Danish Chamber Orchestra, recording Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the latter ensemble for its acclaimed symphony cycle made under Ádám Fischer (winner of the 2020 International Classical Music Award). His concert repertoire also includes Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, Rossini’s Petit Messe Solennelle, Verdi’s Requiem, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and Handel’s Messiah.

Morten has worked with prestigious conductors and directors including Ádám Ficsher, Toshiyuki Kamioka, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Olof Boman, Robert Houssart, Stuart Stratford, Francisco Negrin, Tom Cairns, Harry Fehr and Elisabeth Linton. He has participated in master-classes with Christopher Purves, Helmut Deutsch and Christian Badea.

Morten Grove Frandsen signed to Nordic Artists Management in 2021.
