Biography

Siv Oda Hagerupsen is a mezzo-soprano with a classic zwischenfach tone colour and range, at home in both high mezzo and darker soprano roles. Her versatility and individuality have taken her to all of Norway’s opera companies and beyond.

Siv Oda studied at the North Norway Conservatory of Music and the Oslo Academy of Operatic Arts, where her teachers included Svein Bjørkøy and Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz. She has been coached by Dante Mazzola of La Scala, Milan, and Sergio Olivia of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.

Siv Oda has been a finalist in the Queen Sonja International Music Competition and was selected as a Young Talent by the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra. She made her debut with The Norwegian Opera as the Third Lady in The Magic Flute and returned to the company to sing Marcellina and Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro, Nicklausse/The Muse/The Voice in The Tales of Hoffmann and Mercédès in Carmen.

Siv Oda has worked with Opera Nordfjord, Opera South, the Kristiansand Opera, The Arctic Opera, the Bergen National Opera, Den Nye Opera, Vest Norges Opera, Ringsaker Opera and L’Opera de Montréal. She has appeared at the Nordland Music Festival, the Oslo Opera Festival, the Kirsten Flagstad Festival, Nordland Theatre’s Winterlight Festival, Kristiansund Opera Festival and Opera på Skäret in Sweden. She has appeared as a soloist with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, the Oslo and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestras and the Norwegian Wind Ensemble.

Following her shift from lyrical to dramatic roles, Siv Oda has made her mark with characters including Eboli from Don Carlo and Santuzza from Cavalleria Rusticana. Her extensive repertoire includes Hänsel (Hansel und Gretel), Tisbe (La cenerentola), Suzuki (Madama Butterfly), Madame Larina (Eugene Onegin), Emilia (Otello) and Flora (La Traviata). Siv Oda has created roles in new operas by Per Arne Glorvigen and Bjørn Kruse. She has worked with directors including Stefan Herheim, David Alden, Daniel Bohr and John La Bouchardière and conductors including Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Gregor Bühl, Roland Böer and Patrick Fournillier.

Siv Oda is an experienced oratorio soloist in repertoire from Bach and Telemann to Rossini, Verdi and Dagfinn Rosnes. Outside opera and classical music, she has appeared as a vocal soloist at The National Theatre and Edderkoppen Theatre in Oslo. She signed to Nordic Artists Management in 2018.

I felt I would like to hear her in a meatier part and my wish was fulfilled this year when she sang Princess Eboli. ”Siv Oda Hagerupsen som Eboli gav ännu mer sceniskt utspel i de dramatiska avsnitten och hennes röst klingade totalt fri i samtliga register. Det finns en kärna och lyster i rösten som hon verkar ha total kontroll över. Jag är övertygad om att vi kommer att få höra henne som i Wagners operor som Ortrud, Brangäne m fl. (Det är en tidsfråga innan Bayreuth ringer.) Och varför inte som Lady Macbeth i Verdis Macbeth? Hon är en mezzosopran med höjd! ...Även Eboli styrs av hovets stränga regler. Trots att hon är en vulkan av känslor så kliver hon in i självkontrollen och väljer ett liv i kloster som straff för sitt svek. I arian ”O don fatale” gav Siv Oda Hagerupsen den konflikten sitt fulla uttryck.”
