Sofie Jensen, soprano

Biography

Sofie Jensen's rich lyric voice, brilliant musicianship and captivating stage presence have put her at the forefront of the new generation of Scandinavian singers.

Her recent and future engagements include Gerda Snow Queen at Bayerische Staatsoper München, Rosalinde Die Fledermaus at the Konzert Theater Bern, Marguerite Faust and Mimi La Boheme at the Royal Danish Opera.

A celebrated performer in her native Denmark, at the Royal Opera she had appeared as Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto, Micaëla in Bizet’s Carmen, Vixen in Janacek's Cunning Little Vixen and Juliette in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. Her Mozart roles there include Fiordiligi in Cosi fan Tutte, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro and Pamina in Die Zaiberflöte. With other companies she has also sung Gretel in Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel (Copenhagen Philharmonic) and Valencienne in Lehar's The Merry Widow (Odense Symphony).

A brilliant interpreter of new music and works of the 20th century, Jensen premiered the role of Gerda in Hans Abrahamsen's Snow Queen / Snedronningen for the Royal Danish Opera, and has performed the Maid in Thomas Adès' Powder her Face and Beatriz in the same composer's The Exterminating Angel. She has also sung Madame Mao in John Adams' Nixon in China, Bibi Girl in Svitlana Azarova's Momo, Agnes in David Bruce's Nothing for Den Jyske Opera, and Laetitia in Gian Carlo Menotti's Old Maid and the Thief, for which she received her first Reumert nomination for Singer of the Year.

With an increasing international presence, in addition to the Bayerische Staatsoper in München she has performed with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in Gorecki's 3rd Symphony and at the Kirsten Flagstad festival. In concert, she continues to appear throughout Scandinavia performing the major oratorios of Bach, Handel, Mozart and Haydn, and is an active recitalist of song repertoire, giving yearly concerts at the Copenhagen Opera Festival and recently contributing to a recording project of the complete songs of Peter Heise.

A winner of the Junior Sonning prize, Jensen is also one of the few musicians to have been a recipient of the Danish Culture Minister's award. She was recently made Knight of the Order of Dannebrog.
