Steffen Jespersen, counter-tenor

Biography

Specializing in Baroque repertoire, Steffen has during his studies and now as a member of the newly started Young Artist Program at the Royal Danish Opera become a household name with Baroque ensembles and orchestras in Denmark.

Steffen is a member of the Royal Danish Operas Young Artist Program from 2021-2023. His future engagements include tours and productions with Concerto Copenhagen and baroque orchestras in Scandinavia, recitals and his debut at Copenhagen Opera Festival in August 2023.

A graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the Opera Academy under the Royal Danish Theatre, he made his operatic debut with Danish/Swedish baroque ensemble Camerata Øresund in 2018, where he sang the title role in Vivaldi’s Il Giustino at Denmark’s biggest Early Music Festival.

Since then, he has performed with the ensemble in many concerts and projects ranging from Handel’s Messiah to a portrait concert of the castrato Senesino.

Since 2020 Steffen has been working with Danish baroque orchestra Concerto Copenhagen, singing in Bach’s St. John Passion and Christmas Oratorio. In 2021 Steffen was part of their online production of Fairy Queen by Purcell.

In September 2021 Steffen was awarded with Hans Voigt’s Memorial Scholarship, one of Denmark’s most esteemed honorary grants for young opera singers. At the concert he was accompanied by Concerto Copenhagen’s artistic director Lars Ulrik Mortensen.

During his studies and his work at the Royal Danish Opera Steffen has worked with conductors such as Michael Schønwandt, Andrew Lawrence King and Lars Ulrik Mortensen.

But in small roles you find vocal highlights… in a small role as Blomsterdreng, Steffen Jespersen's voice is a blessing and proof that Denmark has more than one countertenor of the highest level.

Händel’s Messiah, Den Sorte Diamant, 2019 The highlights were sky high and it was thrilling to see the singers put it all on the line with all kinds of dramatic interpretation of the biblical texts. For example when the young countertenor Steffen Jespersen made time stand still in “He was despised”.
