The German conductor Wolfgang Wengenroth studied piano and conducting at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Graz. Choosing to focus on a career in opera, he began work at the Komische Oper Berlin as a repetiteur in 2002. There he soon received the opportunity to conduct works such as The Soldier’s Tale (Stravinsky), Le nozze di Figaro (Mozart) und The Golden Cockerel (Rimsky-Korsakov).

In 2007 he became Kapellmeister at the Theater für Niedersachsen Hildesheim-Hannover and from 2009 until 2014 he held this position at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden. In addition, he has conducted the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Frankfurt, the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, the Badische Staatskapelle, the Berner Symphonieorchester, the Bremer Philharmoniker and several other orchestras in Germany.

Since 2009 he has been engaged regularly at the Ruhrtriennale Festival and since 2013 he has also worked for the Bayreuth Festival as assistant to Kirill Petrenko (RING). In season 2014/15 he conducted The Magic Flute, in addition to the ballets Et Folkesagn and Swan Lake, at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen. Further engagements led him to the Operá National de Lyon for Franz Schreker’s opera Die Gezeichneten.

In 2015/16 he was Cover Conductor and Assistant to Alejo Perez for the production Parsifal at the Teatro Colón, Argentina. Further projects also led him to the Theater an der Wien, Austria (Capriccio, as assistant to Bertrand de Billy) and the Theater für Niedersachsen Hildesheim, where he conducted a symphony concert with Haydn, Schumann and Prokofiev.

In 2016/17 he joins the Nationaltheater Mannheim as Kapellmeister. He is responsible for productions such as Aida (Verdi), The Bat (Strauss) and Rossinis` Il barbiere di Siviglia. In 2017 he will conduct the Ballett Swan Lake at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm.

Wolfgang Wengenroth holds a professorship at the Musikuniveristät Graz.
