Daniel Carlsson, counter-tenor

Biography

Swedish born Daniel Carlsson (1980) has studied in Vadstena, Sweden and the Royal Danish Music Academy with Margrethe Enevold in Copenhagen. He graduated as counter tenor in 2009. Further studies and master classes with Martin Isepp, Jill Feldman, Roger Vignoles, Paul Esswood and Richard Levitt, who was Andreas Scholl's teacher for many years.

Engagements in 2016/17 included a role in Purcell's Fairy Queen at the Royal Opera, Copenhagen, a role in David Bruce's opera Nothing at the Danish National Opera and numerous concert engagements. He has also been reinvited by the reknown Eric Ericsson Choir. In spring 2016 Daniel Carlsson was soloist in the premiere of Sven-David Sandström's St. Matthew Passion. The piece was performed in Germany, Denmark and Sweden.

In 2017/18 Daniel Carlsson was soloist with Concerto Copenhagen in Händel's Brockes Passion on a European tour and he sings Der Fabelsohn in Hans Gefors' The Park at the Malmö Opera, Sweden. Other engagements included Pergolesi: Stabat Mater with Concerto Copenhagen and the premiere of a new piece by Daniel Börtz with Stockholm Philharmonic.

In 2014/15 he was soloist in Bach: Christmas Oratorio with Odense Symphony Orchestra, Denmark and he was engaged by the Eric Ericsson Choir as soloist in St. Matthew Passion in Stockholm Concert Hall. He had the main role in Moto Osada's new opera The Son of Heaven at Vadstena, Sweden in summer 2015.

Other recent engagements include Händel's Messiah and Bach B-minor Mass with South Jutland Symphony Orchestra, Charpentier's Messe de Morts in the Cuenca Baroque Festival, sang Amor (L'incoronazione di Poppea) at Drottningholm Slottsteater, Stockholm. In the Musikfestival Sanssouci in Potsdam, 2010 he sang Nearco (Calandro). The following year he again participated in L'incoronazione di Poppea, but in a new role: Nero. Folkoperan in Stockholm Sweden invited Daniel to sing Tolemaios (Giulio Cesare) in 2013. Other engagements include Farman in the new opera Falling Awake by Lasse Schwanenflügel Piasecki in the ILT Festival, Aarhus, Oberon (Midsummer Night's Dream) at Läckö Slott, Sweden. In 2013/14 Daniel participated in a staged version of Britten's Canticle II ”Abraham and Isaac" at the Gothenburg Opera.

Daniel has worked with conductors like Stephen Layton, Philip Pickett, Mark Tatlow, Olof Boman, Joakim Unander, Benjamin Bayl and Simon Phipps. Other collaborations on a regular basis includes projects with the composer and artist Line Törnhöj. He performed her new piece Portrait in the Danish Radio in spring 2013.
